Sony today introduced a fast, ultra-wide prime ideal for landscape and astrophotography. The Sony FE 14mm F1.8 G Master becomes the 14th lens in Sony’s top-tier G Master line and the widest E-mount prime lens. Sony representative stated that the company set out to “Reinvent the ultra-wide large aperture prime,” when engineering this lens, and it is remarkably lightweight and compact for a wide-angle lens with a fast maximum aperture. It measures just 4 inches in length and just under 3.4 inches in diameter and weighs 16.3 ounces. The Sony FE 14mm F1.8 G Master is very compact for a lens of this focal length and speed. This is a rectilinear lens, meaning that it produces no barrel distortion, and Sony reports that the lens exhibits “extraordinary corner-to-corner resolution.” It offers a minimum focusing distance of 9.8 inches. For astrophotography, the optical design is highly corrected for sagittal coma (a flare distortion that can been seen when zoomed in on stars) and example images shown to press revealed very precise, circular rendering of stars without the wing-like flares.
