Along with today’s announcement of the development of the Canon EOS R3, Canon has also revealed three key new lenses for its full-frame EOS R mirrorless system. These lenses fill important spots in the growing EOS RF lens lineup. All three have expected availability of July 2021. Canon RF100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM The Canon RF100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM is the first true macro lens for the system, which Canon notes is also, “the world’s first medium telephoto macro lens with a maximum magnification of 1.4x.” At that magnification, subjects can be rendered at 1.4 times their actual size in the image frame. (A typical macro lens is 1:1 or 1x magnification.) Though we recommend using a tripod for macro work, the Canon RF100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM has impressive image stabilization capability, especially when paired with a compatible Canon camera. On its own, the Optical Image Stabilizer built-in to the lens provides up to 5 stops of correction, but when used with a camera that includes Canon’s In-Body Image Stabilizer, the system can deliver up to 8 stops of correction.
