It’s always a treat to see the winning images from the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Now in its 56th year, once again the final images from the prestigious contest represent the best of the best when it comes to wildlife and nature photography. This year’s competition attracted over 49,000 entries from both professionals and amateurs across the world. The overall winners were announced live from the Natural History Museum on 13 October – normally, there would be a glittering prize-giving ceremony, but for the first time in the competition’s history, this year, it went completely virtual. The good news is that there is still an exhibition available to see at The Natural History Museum. It is planned to run until the middle of next year. With current restrictions, it’s essential to check your ticket in advance, but if you can make it to the […]

Modern cameras are much more than light-tight boxes for capturing images; they are small but powerful computers that offer an array of capabilities for photographers. Here are five features that every modern camera should have. 1. Built-in Calculations Depending on the genre you shoot, photography can be a very technical pursuit that involves crunching different numbers to make decisions. Imagine if your camera could do that and update them in real-time on the rear screen or in the electronic viewfinder. For example: Your camera already knows the aperture and focal length you have set, and it gets an approximate focus distance from its autofocus algorithms and the position of the lens elements. With this information, it could dynamically display depth of field, including the near and far limits. This would be a huge boon for landscape, macro, or even portrait photographers. Similarly, hyperfocal distance could be displayed, and your […]

Nikon today has announced the second generation of its debut full-frame mirrorless models, the Nikon Z 6II and Nikon Z 7II. The new cameras retain similar market positioning and emphasis as their predecessors, but feature several enhancements to the original Z 6 and Z 7 models introduced in 2018 . Nikon Z 7II The Z 7II is the high-resolution option, and it retains the 45.7-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor in the Z 7 but doubles the processing power with dual EXPEED 6 processors. The Z 6II is similar in this regard; it’s the same 24.5-megapixel BSI sensor in the original Z 6, now with dual processors. Positioned as the “versatile” model, the Z 6II is lower in resolution, but has some advantages in terms of speed and video. The Z 6II can shoot at up to 14 fps, while the Z 7II maxes out at 10 fps—still ample for subjects like […]

Making the relation between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO visible is the idea behind the exposure triangle. I have seen many beautiful drawings of the exposure triangle, but what does this diagram really show? Let’s find out. When writing my Dutch e-book “Licht Vangen,” which translates into Catching Light, I needed to cover the exposure triangle. Although I’m photographing for over four decades, I never used this diagram. But I have seen the many different versions on the internet, and inside popular photography magazines. These drawings often look amazing, covering more than exposure alone. Just do a search on Google, and see for yourself. A search on Google will show a lot of different versions of the exposure triangle Many photography courses cover the exposure triangle, emphasizing its importance in understanding the relation between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. I even hear about photographers who claim to use the […]

Seeing the huge response to the pieces we’ve published about mental health over the last few years has been hugely gratifying, as photography is about much more than f stops, ISO wrangling or the arcana of lenses. Photography fascinates us because of its infinite variety: it’s an art, a science, a tool to enhance our well-being, and a lot more besides. This year has been particularly difficult for anyone struggling with inner demons, and although the worst of the lockdown isolation is hopefully over for many, this wretched, ongoing virus is hardly conducive to optimism. We are where we are, however, and one big positive to come out of 2020 has been the growing appreciation of photography’s power to help us cope with difficult times. Maybe it’s because taking pictures often gets you out into nature and away from your ‘washing machine’ head, or the false refuge of your […]

Canon’s big announcement this week was the brand new EOS M50 Mark II , an upgrade to the insanely popular M50 that was released in 2018. But how “brand new” is it, and does it qualify as an upgrade if all of the new features could easily have been delivered through a firmware update? The marketing spiel from Canon would have you believe that the M50 Mark II offers significant advantages over its predecessor. “The EOS M50 Mark II continues to pave the way for photography and video enthusiasts,” gushes Tatsuro Kano, executive vice president and general manager of the Canon U.S.A, “to experience a lightweight interchangeable lens camera with many similar features as our full-frame professional mirrorless cameras.” The “improved video features and autofocus capabilities” suggest that the M50 has had a bump in specifications, and while you might forgive Canon for using the exact same 24.1 megapixel […]

As featured in MPB’s recently announced Hall of Fame , the ‘game changing’ Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is one of the best used lenses you can buy. Here we take a look at the particular strengths (and a few weaknesses) of the lens, and share some invaluable insights from owners. Two years after the release of the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Art, the Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art arrived. This highly anticipated prime received a lot of interest when word got round that Sigma wasn’t out to compete against Canon or Nikon prime lenses of the same focal length, but the Zeiss Otus 55mm f1.4 – a lens that’s as close to optical perfection as it gets. Significantly cheaper than Zeiss’s offering, the Sigma is in the same league in terms of optical quality and offers autofocus whereas its close rival is manual focus only. […]

Canon’s new Speedlite EL-1 will sit on top of the company’s lineup of on-and-off-camera portable flashes. A command dial and joystick combine with a new menu layout to allow for faster manipulation of key settings for the user, and a very low minimum power rating helps set it apart from other options on the market. The EL-1 uses a new battery – the LP-EL – that allows for a 0.9-sec recycle time at full power, and a claimed 335 full-power flashes. Though the new battery can be charged via the LC-E6 charger that owners of Canon’s full-frame DSLR and mirrorless cameras likely already own, the LP-E6 battery that powers those cameras cannot be used to power the flash. The EL-1 flash has roughly the same maximum power output as the company’s existing 600EX Speedlite (a Guide Number of 60m / 197ft at ISO 100 and 200mm flash coverage), but […]
